Our Mission Statement
What is John’s JourneyWalk?
John’s Journey Walk is dedicated to honoring those facing challenges related to addiction, recovery, and mental health, as well as their loved ones. It is not a celebration of an end but a step towards a new beginning. This journey symbolizes hope, well-being, empathy, recovery, and faith for all individuals affected by these struggles.
Why do we do this?
John's Journey tells the story of a charming individual who navigated through addictions, mental health challenges, and personal hardships that resonate with many today. John, a brilliant man and a beloved brother and son, was deeply cherished by his family and friends who understood his struggles but were unable to offer effective help. His story resonates with those who have faced similar challenges or know someone in a similar situation. Support is essential to guide individuals towards a better path, and this journey is dedicated to that cause.
What does our organization do?
Our primary goal is to increase awareness, build a network, educate, offer, and provide resources that go beyond our yearly walk.
What is our main goal?
Spreading awareness and backing these causes. You can support us by making a donation to John’s Journey! Join us by putting on your walking shoes and taking a walk together! Bring along your family, friends, and dogs to enjoy the event with us!
Who do we support?
We aid individuals in coping with and overseeing mental health, addictions, and recovery. Each year, all proceeds from our annual walk are donated to a chosen organization to support them in mentoring, outreach, and community initiatives.
What sparks the passion behind it?
John struggled with addictions from his teenage years until December 27, 2021, when he was tragically discovered alone and deceased, with only the clothes on his back. His family, though shocked, had anticipated this outcome as John had battled personal addictions and mental health issues for years. While John had previously considered and attempted suicide, the exact cause of his death remains uncertain – whether it was due to alcohol, drugs, or another factor. His family awaits the Medical Examiner's report for clarity on the circumstances. Addiction can lead to both physical and psychological harm, as well as dependency. When discussing addiction, key signs include intense cravings, loss of control over usage amount and frequency, the urge to use, and continued substance consumption despite negative consequences. In Canada, almost 21% of the population (six million people) will meet the criteria for addiction use with alcohol being the most used substance at 18 percent. Marijuana has one of the highest rates of use in the world with 40 percent of Canadians experimenting and using cannabis and ten pe cent using it in the past year. (Association, 2022)
