OFFICIAL MASCOT John’s Journey Walk Foundations official mascot is the hummingbird. Why did we choose this bird?

Hummingbirds represent joy and healing. Hummingbirds bring restoration to the life of whoever may see one.

Hummingbirds are not just among the smallest birds globally; their wings flap at remarkable speeds, and they possess the unique ability to fly backward. Each hummingbird species exhibits distinct characteristics and behaviors. With over 300 species worldwide, each hummingbird embodies its unique symbolism or lesson. Consider the various colors, shapes, habitats, and other traits of hummingbirds, as they may convey specific and individual messages.

There is something truly enchanting about the hummingbird that sets it apart from all other creatures on our planet. It's not just a figment of our imagination – take a look at some of the remarkable abilities of this extraordinary bird:

  • Flies backwards, hovers up and down, and transitions from full-speed flight to an instant stop

  • Wings beat up to 80 times per second, producing a humming sound similar to bees or insects

  • Lays the smallest bird eggs globally

  • The world's tiniest bird, the bee hummingbird of Cuba, measures a mere 5 centimeters from its beak to the tip of its tail.

Native American:

The Native American hummingbird is a powerful symbol, and they are believed to be an envoy from the spirit world or from heaven. These amazing birds are believed to be healers sent to cure people from their ailments, and represent wisdom, healing, and patience.

Mexico:

The Aztecs (Mesoamerican people of central Mexico in the 14th—16th century), distinguished the hummingbird as the main sign of their god, Huitzilopochtli – The God of Sun and War. They also considered them as a symbol of rebirth. Any warrior that died during a fight would be resurrected as a hummingbird. Hummingbirds bring positive messages and good thoughts from loved ones who have passed and are thought to be excellent communicators in Mexican culture.

Asia: These birds are viewed as a symbol of good luck. Chinese Feng Shui symbolically implies they can uplift a room’s energy. Hummingbirds carry all five of the element colors and believed to create positive qi (life force energy).

Mayan legend: The hummingbird is actually the sun in disguise trying to court a beautiful woman known the moon. Another Mayan legend says the first two hummingbirds were created from the small feather scraps left over from the construction of other birds.

In the Bible they related to the divine concepts of eternity and infinity. Hummingbirds have many biblical meanings, including joy, love, positivity, hope, eternal life, and resurrection. They are a symbol of faith and healing in the Bible, while the blue hummingbird signifies hope and rebirth. They bring Gods message of love, goodness, and peace swiftly guiding us to faith if we fall astray.

Hinduism:

Hindus believed the hummingbirds to represent hope and happiness. The appearance of hummingbirds is seen as a time of new beginnings and high energy.
